Google.org has made a commitment to address climate change head on. There are two large and growing concerns sparked by climate change: how to prevent, minimize or “mitigate” emission of greenhouse gases and, to the extent there is a certain amount of warming that is now inevitable, helping communities adapt to climate-caused changes. Of course, “mitigation” is the first concern, but Google is also mindful that the consequences of global warming will fall most heavily upon the world’s poor, as they will have to “adapt” to drought, rising sea levels and climate instability which will exacerbate health and development challenges. Thus Google.org focuses its investment, policy and public engagement activities on efforts to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the efficiency of energy use, and the use of cleaner and renewable energy sources. Google.org funds projects that take on the biggest challenges, and will be effective on a large scale.
