NRG

NRG Energy, Inc., a Fortune 500 company, owns and operates one of the country's largest and most diverse power generation portfolios. NRG's 48 plants provide approximately 24,000 megawatts of generation capacity – enough to power nearly 20 million homes. Headquartered in Princeton, NJ, NRG is a member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a group of business and environmental organizations calling for mandatory legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Google.org

Google.org has made a commitment to address climate change head on. There are two large and growing concerns sparked by climate change: how to prevent, minimize or "mitigate" emission of greenhouse gases and, to the extent there is a certain amount of warming that is now inevitable, helping communities adapt to climate-caused changes. Of course, "mitigation" is the first concern, but Google is also mindful that the consequences of global warming will fall most heavily upon the world's poor, as they will have to "adapt" to drought, rising sea levels and climate instability which will exacerbate health and development challenges. Thus Google.org focuses its investment, policy and public engagement activities on efforts to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the efficiency of energy use, and the use of cleaner and renewable energy sources. Google.org funds projects that take on the biggest challenges, and will be effective on a large scale.

Idealab

Bill Gross started Idealab in 1996 to create and operate pioneering technology companies. The structure of Idealab has allowed it to test many ideas at once and turn the best of them into companies, attracting the human and financial capital necessary to bring them to market.

Many of these companies were among the first to introduce new business ideas to the market. CitySearch, now a part of InterActive Corp., established the category of local online community directories. eToys demonstrated the tremendous potential for online consumer retail and became one of the most recognized brands during the early days of e-commerce. Overture Services, which began life as GoTo.com, was the first company to introduce the concept of paid search. Now part of Yahoo!, Overture's business model is the underpinning of a multibillion-dollar online search market.

Idealab continues to explore a range of technology frontiers. New models for improving the search experience are at the core of several companies currently growing inside of Idealab. Moving beyond the Internet, it has spawned companies with breakthrough technologies in robotics (Evolution Robotics), three-dimensional printing (Desktop Factory) and renewable energy (Energy Innovations), among others. Idealab also continues to partner with leading venture capital firms and other strategic investors to provide the resources to maximize the potential of these companies.

eSolar has turned solar on its head: instead of deploying large and expensive mirrors, it uses small, cheap mirrors in mass quantities. We think eSolar and Bill Gross have taken a giant step to cracking the code of solar technology. Dan Reicher, Director of Climate Change and Energy Initiatives, Google.org
